Mermaid Street, Rye, Sussex, England - On the right of the picture, covered in ivy, is the Mermaid Inn. Its cellars were built in 1156 AD. The inn was a haunt for the notorious Hawkhurst Gang of local smugglers in the 1730s and 1740, who would often celebrate at the bar after a successful smuggling campaign. The street itself was once the town's main road. I took this photograph about 30 minutes after sunset. England has a few really good locations similar to this, Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Castle Combe in Wiltshire for example.
