Ponte Fabricio, Chiesa di San Giovanni Calibita, Rome, Italy - The Tiber Island (Isola Tiberina) lies in the middle of Tiber river. It is a natural ford (shallow crossing place) which was essential for allowing the construction of various buildings, including the Fatebenefratelli Hospital. The island is connected to the banks through the Fabricio and Cestio bridges. The Ponte Fabricio, (Pons Fabricius or Ponte dei Quattro Capi) built in 62 BC, is the oldest Roman bridge in the city. The bridge exists completely intact, in its original state from Roman antiquity, and has been in continuous use ever since.
