Abduction Of Europe, Monument, Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece - In Greek mythology, Europa, after whom the continent Europe was named, was the mother of King Minos. It's believed that Zeus was infatuated with Europa and seduced her by transforming himself into a white bull. Europa climbed upon his back and Zeus took her across the sea to the island of Crete, where he revealed his real identity. The statue is located on the far east of the city along the coast by a car park. Agios Nikolaos itself translates to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and of Greece. A short ferry ride from Agios Nikolaos will take you to the island of Spinalonga, the old Venetian fortress and then leper colony.
