Marshall Suloway Bridge (La Salle Street Bridge), Chicago, Illinois, America - The single-deck bascule bridge (constructed in 1928) spans the Chicago River, connecting Near North Side with the Loop area. It was a bitterly cold morning when I took this photograph, the mist was freezing but provided a great atmosphere to the shot. The gritters had just deiced the roads and paths. Interestingly they use beetroot juice as an additive and spreader for the salt. It keeps the salt chlorides as a slurry at much lower temperatures, the technique was pioneered in Minnesota.
