Wet Roads, La Salle Street Bridge, Chicago, Illinois, America, looking down towards Chicago Board of Trade Building - The city grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century then suffered the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which left over 100,000 people homeless. After the fire the city quickly rebooted and by 1900 became one of the largest in the world. Chicago constructed the world's first skyscraper (The Home Insurance Building) in 1885, using steel-skeleton construction, it was 180 feet tall after it added another two floors. Chicago's position along Lake Michigan and the construction of O'Hare International Airport made the city an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. When I photograph cities I always stay in downtown hotels, not just for the convenience but for the ability to walk back to areas multiple times. I stood here three different times on my way to other locations, and every time the conditions were different. The extra money for the downtown hotel is covered by the extra photographs you're able to get.
