Surprise View, Lake District, Cumbria, England - The lake, at 3 miles long, 1 mile wide and 72 feet deep, is about a ten-minute walk from the centre of town, past the Theatre by the Lake. You can walk the eight miles around the lake, or take a lake cruise from the landing stages here on Keswick Launch. There are four islands on the Lake, Lord's Island (once the home of the Earl of Derwentwater), Derwent Island, St Herbert's Island (named after the hermit who lived there in the 7th Century), and Rampsholme Island. I took this photograph from Walla Crag, at the viewpoint called Surprise View, if you follow the B5289 south from Keswick, at Ashness Jetty turn off left, the lane will take you past Ashness Bridge, continue on half a mile to the viewpoint.
