Gate, Cotswold Field, Broadway, Worcestershire, England - I used an old Canon 5d mark 2, it's a great camera but lacks dynamic range compared to the newer models. I make up for this by bracketing my shots, shooting usually a -3 -1 and +1 exposure set and combine them in Lightroom (merge to HDR). I occasionally use Photomatix as I find it can produce interesting results, especially in the sky. The trick, I found with Photomatix HDR, is to use it very selectively, merging it in with the Lightroom creation using a soft brush at low opacity. The problem with using glass filters is that the tree here would be totally black, having no data to recover in post.
